In my book The Portlanders I’ve looked at the streets of Portland with some awareness of my growing up in Oregon and a life-long connection to Portland. Our family were campers for as long as I can remember. In fact my first memory of using a camera was on a camping trip when I was 7 years old. The picture above is pretty typical of my camping experience, Rambler station wagon and a canvas tent that the car could back into and be covered by the flap that’s visible in the photo.

During the COVID pandemic, tents became extra dining rooms, family gathering spots, and in the case of the photo above, an exam room at the neighborhood clinic.

The also became homes for Portlanders.
